The Supreme Court has upheld the conviction of Aminu Sule Lamido, son of former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, for failing to declare $40,000 in cash and making a false declaration of foreign currency. Aminu was arrested in 2012 at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport while attempting to travel to Cairo, Egypt, with $50,000, despite declaring only $10,000 to Nigerian Customs Service officials.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) charged Aminu with false declaration of foreign currency, and in 2015, the Federal High Court in Kano convicted him and ordered the forfeiture of 25% of the undeclared sum to the federal government. Aminu’s appeals to the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court were unsuccessful, with the apex court affirming the lower courts’ decisions on January 16, 2026.
