A British Virgin Islands-based company. The agreement aimed to develop a gas processing plant in Nigeria, but the project failed to materialize.
In 2015, an arbitration tribunal ruled that Nigeria was liable for breach of contract and awarded P&ID $6.6 billion in damages, plus interest, totaling around $11 billion. However, Nigeria challenged the award, alleging that P&ID obtained the contract and arbitration award through corrupt practices, including bribery of Nigerian officials.
The UK High Court ultimately ruled in Nigeria’s favor, setting aside the $11 billion award. The court found that P&ID had engaged in fraudulent conduct, including bribing Nigerian officials and providing false evidence to the tribunal. The judge described P&ID’s actions as “the most severe abuses of the arbitral process”.
